Forgetfulness can be annoying. Where did I leave my keys? I know I put that document somewhere. Have you seen my cell phone? Thankfully the “find my phone” app bails me out.
Sometimes forgetfulness is good. The Bible tells us that God forgets our transgressions and removes them as far as the east is from the west. (Isaiah 43:25, Psalm 103:12) We should forget our past regrets, sins and grievances, and the things that impede us, and move on to our new life in Jesus. (Philippians 3:13)
But there are some things we should never forget. Today is 9/11 and we should not forget those who respond to help us whether as firefighters, first responders, police or the military. We are blessed by their service and sacrifices. We also should not forget the atrocities of those who follow the courses of evil and threaten to harm us. Our remembrance helps us stand strong and vigilant and not allow evil to take a foothold.
We also should never forget the wonderful blessings and creative works of our amazing God. The Psalmist reminds us to remember the great things God has done and to tell them to our children and our children’s children. (Psalm 71:18) When we remember God’s amazing love, and grace our hearts are gladdened with joy. When we notice the incredible works of His hands in nature, and remember His creative power and delight, (it was very good) we want to sing and praise.
So today, as we remember 9/11, let us not forget all the things that are important, but choose to forget whatever holds us back.
Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits. (Psalm 10 3:2)
Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:13)
